The first chapter is a meta-analysis that provides a quantitative summary of data from 10 community-based physical activity interventions across 5 countries. The analysis provides evidence for the efficacy of physical activity interventions (standardized mean difference (SMD) = 1.275; percentage increase in physical activity = 29.5%) in increasing levels of physical activity. These findings support the notion that multi-strategic community-wide interventions are able to reach a large proportion of the population regardless of social class and socioeconomic level.
